ABOUT
ABOUT ME
I started painting, drawing, and sewing from a young age in rural Sonoma County, California. Born to a Carpenter and an Architect, I was thrown into a world of design and fabrication at a young age, and helped my dad pour foundation, frame, and finish our home based off of my mom’s designs.
As a teen, altering vintage clothes and printing and sewing patches to add to jackets before going to underground punk and indie shows was commonplace. Under the redwoods, I would browse the pages of underground zines, Vogue and GQ alike, play and study character design for video games, and travel to San Francisco with my friends to walk Haight street and the mission district in search of inspiration. Before going off to college in Southern California, I studied at the Academy of Art SF, honing my skills in 3D Modeling, 3D Animation, and Traditional Animation.
At 20 years old, I started my first clothing line. I learned the ins and outs of screen printing and custom made, sourcing and swatching, communicating with vendors and manufacturers, and selling product in stores. I collaborated with a well known Street Wear photographer, who also shot the Hundreds and Diamond Supply Co, to produce my first lookbook.
It was only once I moved to Los Angeles that I realized a career in Costume Design would be my path, and I started to ACD on independent projects and Costume Design for music videos and commercials. Soon after, I joined the Costume Designer’s Guild in 2014 and designed my first feature, The Cleaner for Hulu. I later joined 705 in 2019 while working on American Horror Story and dove into the Star Wars universe, fitting and shopping for 3 shows.
Throughout my career I’ve simultaneously gained continued inspiration as a musician since I was a teen, playing underground and mainstream venues, and later touring all over the world with my wife Kim House, playing drums in her band.
I believe that Costume Design is Character Design. That the best characters on screen are wearing Costumes that make them feel simultaneously familiar and original. The best costumes help an actor to step into a character, and feel seamlessly at home in their artistic exploration. Every fray, stain, shoelace, and wrinkle (or lack of), should be the character’s own.
